Discipline
All children will be given specific and continual feedback regarding the choices they are making. Both positive feedback and redirection will be shared frequently with each child. Should behavior occur that needs to be redirected, it will be handled as described below.
Redirection
Adults will calmly approach the child and intervene immediately as needed to maintain safety. Adults will validate the child’s thinking and feelings then allow them time to gain control of their body. Adults will then teach alternative ways to get what they want and need while also establishing clear and consistent boundaries for safety and kindness. The desired behavior will always be modeled and stated positively.
Adults will make direct eye contact with the child and model the behavior expected, then help the child to practice that behavior. Children will also be taught how to repair relationships and encouraged to do so as appropriate.
Parental Involvement
If the child continues to have the same inappropriate behavior after several times of being redirected, or if the child is resistant to using the strategies and making relationship repairs, daycare staff will consult with families for next steps.
